OPEN LETTER TO THE DIRECTOR GENERAL OF DEPARTMENT OF STATE SECURITY (DSS)
INCITING STATEMENTS AGAINST PRESIDENT BUHARI BY THE ATTORNEY GENERAL OF AKWA IBOM STATE
We will wish to bring to your attention the inciting, seditious and provocative statements made by the Commissioner for Justice & Attorney General of Akwa Ibo State, Mr Uwemedimo Nwoko against President Muhammadu Buhari in a radio broadcast last week in week.
Speaking on a government-sponsored programme ‘Dakkada Akwa Ibom’ on Comfort FM 95.1FM in Uyo, Mr. Nwoko said, among many other vicious remarks: “I wasn’t impressed with the kind of excuses offered by the President on the herdsmen, that reflects badly on the government in terms of his capacity, reasoning ability and readiness to tackle this heinous crime committed by the herdsmen”. I find myself unable to take away the feeling that this president and the present government is not ready to fight the herdsmen problem, possibly because of the president’s emotional attachment to the Fulani tribe where he comes from”.
He continued: ‘Protecting the herdsmen has earned the President accolades from the North as the only president that is protecting the Fulanis and he is very happy to be called the only person that is protecting the Fulanis at the expense of the totality of every other Nigerians out of about 250 ethnic groups that we have in this country and that is very sad.”
Coming from an attorney general and a senior government official, we find these outbursts very insulting and demeaning to the President, and deliberately made to incite the public against President Buhari and the federal government. Even the attorneys-general in Benue, Taraba or Zamfara States were these problems are prominent would not be this callous and irresponsible in their characterisation of the problem. It is imponderable to assume that President Buhari would condone the senseless killings going on in some parts of the country; and we believe that the security agencies would soon contain the problems. In fact the arrests of the key suspects in Benue and the abatement of the rampage there is a clear indication that the government is willing and capable of containing the problems, just like Boko Haram has been contained.
We therefore find Mr. Nwoko’s vituperations very disturbing, especially since it follows a clear pattern of similar unwarranted attacks against the President and federal government by officials of Akwa Ibom State. Last year, Mr. Essien Ndueso, an official in the Governor’s Media Office, wrote on a facebook post that ‘President Buhari’s cows in Daura are better fed than most Nigerians’. Alongside the derogatory post was a photograph of the President in his farm shortly after he returned from his medical leave last year. Mr Emmanuel Enoidem, a former commissioner in Udom Emmanuel’s cabinet (now PDP’s National Legal Adviser) regularly castigates the president and pours venom on the President and the federal government. He is a regular guest on Channels TV and is a prolific writer on Social Media where he continuously spews out pungent, foul, fabricated and hate-filled stories against the president. Mr Enoidem is a very close ally of Udom Emmanuel.
In all these, Governor Udom Emmanuel has never called his staff or the attorney general or any of these agent provocateurs to order. In fact, if anything, it is the governor himself who had sown the seeds for these disparaging commentaries in the hearts of his staff and allies. In late 2015, the governor addressed a rally in Uyo where he announced that President Buhari is ‘a Fulani man who is only interested in taking Akwa Ibom oil’. It was soon after the Appeal Court had ruled that the governor was not duly elected and therefore cancelled his election. Is Udom Emmanuel driven by ethnic bigotry?
The ease with which Gov. Udom Emmanuel and his commissioners and staff resort to ethnic attacks, hate speeches and disparaging comments against the person of President Buhari goes beyond opposition politicking and borders on insidious and systematic attempts to embarrass, ridicule and deride the federal government. We find no justifiable reasons for these continued acts of antagonism and ill wind against the President by Udom Emmanuel. President Buhari has consistently bent over backwards to accommodate this governor, and indeed all other governors elected on the platform of other political parties. Udom Emmanuel has received his fair share of federal allocations, Paris Club refunds and refunds for federal roads constructed by the previous administration. The governor has even been invited to join the president on many foreign trips. Even Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has reached out to Udom Emmanuel in love, warmth and fellowship, yet all to no avail. Why then is he sponsoring these vicious attacks against the Presidents? What are the motives? How does he benefit from these insults and incitements?
We request the DSS to launch intensive investigations into the motives for the personal attacks, insults and abuses hauled against the person of President Buhari by the governor and officials of Akwa Ibom State government.
