NIG VS ZAMBIA : Five killed, scores unconscious, others injured in Ibom Stadium

Five people have been killed, dozens unconscious, while others sustained serious injury trying to gain entrance into Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The fans, who were at the stadium to watch the match between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Chipolopo of Zambia on Saturday, were beaten by soldiers at the gates of the stadium with heavy sticks and suddenly fell unto the ground where the rampaging crowd stepped over them.

Blood of those who died, those who sustained serious injury as well as those who were in coma, were seen everywhere around the gate of the stadium.

Police and the Federal Road Safety Corps personnel were seen standing beside some unconscious fans.

Our correspondent who was also a victim, was beaten by a soldier with a large stick with N10,000 removed from his pockets.

Shoes of those who had fallen victims to security manhandling were seen in every section of the stadium.

Some of the fans who spoke with our correspondent and vowed never to be at Ibom Stadium again for any subsequent matches, said they escaped death by whiskers.

A female fan, Aniema Ekong, who told our correspondent that apart from the five people that were taken away in ambulance dead, added that she did not see any possibility for some fans who were in coma to survive.

“I thank God that I’m alive. This is not the first time this incident took had occurred. It’s been happening. In fact, in every major tournament, there is always a tale to tell of security agents injuring or killing people.

“To me it seems as this stadium is a blood sucking demon that has been brought to this place. My experience today is different. Today’s experience is a near dead one. Let them be with their stadium. To me, watching matches here again, will be impossible,” she said.

A man, who only told our correspondent his first name, Chukwudi, said his girlfriend had been severely injured by security personnel manning the gate.

He said the security pushed the lady to the gate, where she hit her left shoulder and arms again the gate and fell flat to the ground. He said the lady had been taken to a nearby hospital.

He said, “I don’t know why there is always trouble in this stadium (Godswill Akpabio International Stadium). Each time there is a match, there is always one problem or the other.

“We have taken her to a nearby hospital for urgent attention.”

Our correspondent while writing this story, still I served ambulance taking unconscious fans to hospitals.

Many people were seen leaving the stadium thanking God for their lives.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Elkana Bala, said he would find out what actually happened at the stadium and get back to our correspondent.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Charles Udoh, told our correspondent that he would call the Commissioner for Health to find out what has happened.
